Amazon Web Services announced on October 5, 2026 that Anthropic Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5 are available through Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud Regions, alongside guidance for using Claude Code for regulated development workloads.
What changed
The availability of Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 in GovCloud expands the environments where teams can use Anthropic models for software development. AWS specifically discusses Claude Code in the context of compliance-aligned and ITAR workloads.
Why regulated development is different
Government, defense, and other sensitive systems often require stricter controls around data location, access, auditability, identity, and authorization than ordinary development environments.
Claude Code in an enterprise workflow
Agentic coding tools can read repositories, reason about changes, execute commands, run tests, and iterate. In regulated environments these capabilities need clearly defined permissions and network boundaries.
Operational considerations
Teams should still validate their own authorization model, data classifications, logging requirements, software supply-chain controls, and contractual obligations. GovCloud availability alone does not make every workflow compliant with every organizational policy.
Practical takeaway: The GovCloud expansion is significant for teams that want agentic coding while maintaining a regulated AWS deployment boundary.
